Coastal Cleanup Month

This year, due to Covid-related restrictions on large scale in-person events, we’re celebrating Coastal Cleanup Day across LA for the entire month of September. From the foothills of the San Gabriels to DTLA, from the San Fernando Valley to the Hollywood Hills on down to the Ballona Wetlands, every corner of our coastal urban watershed is connected to the ocean. The ocean is downstream from everything and whether you live downtown, in the valley, in the canyons or at the beach, your everyday actions have an impact on our ocean, waves and beaches.

Sign up to be one of our Cleanup Ambassadors and show some love to your community during this epic month-long activation. Ambassadors will be outfitted with a Surfrider Foundation hat, reusable bag + gloves, trash-picker and hand scale to weigh each haul. In turn, Ambassadors commit to the following:

  • Conduct at least 3 cleanups through the month of September at a location of your choice (trail, park, alley, block, beach, neighborhood, etc.)
  • Download and fill out our data cards to use during each cleanup (English / Spanish)
  • Snap photos of your cleanups and tag us on social media using the handles + hashtags: @surfriderla @surfrider #CoastalCleanupMonth
  • Email completed data cards to volunteer@la.surfrider.org

We’re stoked to offer special 1st, 2nd and 3rd place prizes for Ambassadors who remove the most trash! Prizes include Surfrider swag bags and gift certificates from our local Ocean Friendly Restaurants.

Please be sure to check out our best practices for conducting safe cleanup sessions while adhering to local guidelines for mask-wearing and physical distancing.

While we wish we could gather together and clean our favorite beaches, creeks, parks and neighborhood blocks we are excited to empower our members and supporters to get out there with their families and housemates to conduct cleanup their favorite park, beach, trail or neighborhood block, whatever is convenient and close to home.
