Yesterday morning the LA City Council voted unanimously to pass a motion that advances phasing out oil and gas extraction across the City of Los Angeles, home to the largest oil field in the country. This vote is historic and is a testament to the grassroots organizing strength and power of STAND LA and the impacted community members who have suffered the burden of neighborhood oil drilling for decades.

This landmark vote will help establish an ordinance that prohibits any new oil and gas extraction operations while also declaring existing extraction activities a nonconforming land use in all areas of the city. Importantly, it also will direct the City to participate in L.A. County’s Just Transition Taskforce to ensure an equitable transition plan for all impacted oil workers. Congratulations to STAND LA and all the Angelenos who were a part in getting this across the finish line. Let’s celebrate this momentous victory for racial justice, environmental justice & public health, together.
